Alabama – White Thang
The White Thang is said to be seven or eight feet tall, covered in thick white fur, some accounts saying it looks like a white lion. Meanwhile the more outrageous say it looks like a white kangaroo with the head of a cat. This creature is known for it’s ability to move quickly, often running on all fours. Witnesses to the horrifying creature say it sounds like a woman screaming and that it smells of death.
Alaska – Tizheruk
The Tizheruk is a very mysterious creature, most have only seen it’s head and neck and occasionally it’s tail. It can rise out of the water up to eight feet high and is found in bays, and rarely in the open ocean. Its head looks like a snake’s and has a flippered tail. Sailors say you can attract this creature by tapping on the insides of boats.
Arizona – Mogollon Monster
The Mogollon Monster is a sasquatch type creature, reported to look like a man with long white hair and a matted beard that reached his knees. He doesn’t wear any clothing and is instead covered in grey hair nearly all over, with patches of skin showing through. Reports say it has long sharp claws that are used to climb up cliff faces. It often uses a club as well, brandishing it at people who stray too far off the beaten path.
Arkansas – Fouke Monster
Another sasquatch-like creature is the Fouke Monster seen first in Fouke Arkansas in 1946. It isn’t seen often and likes to stay in the bogs and creeks in the woods of Arkansas. Only tracks and claw marks have been recovered, the footprints are said to be seventeen inches long and seven inches wide.
California – Dark Watchers
Dark Watchers are human-like creatures who stand on the hills, ridges, and peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains. People who have seen them say they watch those who wander into the mountains though they are not aggressive. They are most often spotted around twilight and are usually seen staring upwards toward the sky while standing atop the mountains.
Colorado – Slide-Rock Bolter
Colorado’s Slide-Rock Bolter is an enormous creature that is somewhat fishlike. Reports say it has a split tail and no legs with two giant hooks at the end of each tail fin. These hooks are used to dig into the side of a mountain so the monster can wait for another victim. The top of it’s body is often mistaken for boulders, letting it camouflage into the rocky mountainside easily. It will wait for days for an animal or an unsuspecting tourist to walk through its path, when it finally does happen the creature is said to lift its tail, release the hooks that keep in on the cliffs and hurdle toward its prey. These creatures are so large that the speed they travel and the size of their wide mouths make it nearly impossible to avoid.
Connecticut – Melon Heads
These Melon Heads are very similar to those that also reside in Michigan, some say they might travel. They are small humanoids with oversized heads, and they rarely come out from hiding. They survive by eating small animals, stray cats and human flesh, usually the flesh of teenagers. Some believe they are experiments gone wrong or escapees from an asylum.
Delaware – Selbyville Swamp Monster
The Selbyville Swamp Monster is a yeti-like creature that is not often seen, and if it is victims are not alive to tell the tale. It likes to live in the swaps of Selbyville and scare off humans with startling screams and it’s rancid breath.
Florida – Skunk Ape
The Skunk Ape is similar to bigfoot, named after its smell and appearance. People have said it is a man-sized ape. The skunk ape has been reported on since the early 1800s, with a family in Key Largo going to the sheriff’s office in the 1970s, claiming the skunk ape was stalking them.
Georgia – Altamaha-ha
The Altamaha-ha was first seen by the Tama, a Native American Tribe, which predates British-English colonization. According to this tribe the creature has a sturgeon-like body including the bony ridge on its top. Front flippers and no back limbs, it swims like a dolphin and has the snout of a crocodile. It is said to be gray in color with a whitish-yellow underbelly.
Hawaii – Menehune
The Menehune is supposedly a race of pygmy people. It is said they live in the deep forests and valleys of the Hawaiian Islands. Their favorite food is said to be bananas and fish. These creatures don’t stand more than 2 to 3 feet tall. It is said that these small people built temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, canoes, and houses. Some of these structures still exist, and the craftsmanship is evident. They are said to have lived in Hawaii before settlers arrived from Polynesia many centuries ago.
Idaho – Sharlie
Sharlie is a reptile-like sea serpent much like the Loch Ness Monster that is said to live in the deep waters of Payette Lake near McCall, Idaho. Many people say it is between 30 and 40 feet long and when diving leaves a wake similar to a small motor boat.
Illinois – The Enfield Horror
The Enfeild Horror is said to have three legs, a short body, two little short arms, and two pink eyes as big as flashlights. It stands four-and-a-half-feet tall and is grayish-colored. The beast hisses not unlike a wildcat and can seemingly cover fifty feet in three leaps.
Indiana – Beast of Busco
The Beast of Busco is found in Churubusco, Indiana first in1898 and more recently in 1948. Many believe it to be a giant snapping turtle or even an alligator snapping turtle, possibly weighing as much as 500 pounds. Even if this snapping turtle was just that, a turtle it would be at least 50 years old, quite near the end of life for turtles of that size.
Iowa – Van Meter Monster
The Van Meter Monster was first seen in October of 1903. Several people said they saw a half-animal, half-human winged creature that terrorized some of the town’s residents for several nights. The beast is said to have large bat-like wings, leaves a terrible stench wherever it goes, and, even stranger, it fires beams of bright light from its forehead.
Kansas – Sink Hole Sam
Sink Hole Sam is said to inhabit a portion of Inman Lake in Kansas known as “The Sinkhole”. Some believe it is a prehistoric creature that lived in flooded underground caverns that somehow led into the lake. The first sighting of the beast came from two men fishing at the sinkhole, they saw the creature and said it was 15 feet in length and as round as an “automobile tire.”
Kentucky – The Kelly Little Green Men
The Kelly Little Green Men are aliens with almost perfectly rounded oversized heads, long arms extended almost to the ground with talons for fingers, its eyes were said to have glowed with a yellowish light. These green men were seen on August 21, 1955 by an entire family in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The family reported to have been terrorized by them all night long, and even shot at them to no avail.
Louisiana – Rougarou
The Rougarou is called the “Werewolf of the Swamps”, as it looks to be a werewolf or dog-like creature originating in the rich Cajun folklore along the swamps and bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It was first named after the “loup-garou,” which is the French word for werewolf. Over the years in Southern Louisiana, it morphed into Rougarou.
Maine – Specter Moose
The Spectre Moose is an extremely large white moose that was first seen in Lobster Lake. Later it was seen near Sourdnahunlt Lake where a hunter fired several slugs into the animal without any apparent effect, except for making it angry. This hunter later remarked that the moose weighed near a ton, and was as tall as a camel. Gilman Brown of West Newbury, Massachusetts, once got close enough to the moose on the Roach River to count 22 points on one side of his antlers. Usually, moose antlers rarely have more than 8 to 12 points on a side. Other reports say that the Spectre Moose is a white or light gray coloring, stands 10 to 15 feet tall, weighs nearly 2,500 pounds, and has an immense set of antlers that stretch from 10 to 12 feet across. In comparison, an average male moose in Maine at the time weighed about 800-900 pounds, stood around six feet tall, and had an antler span of around four to six feet.
Maryland – Chessie
Chessie is a large serpent-like animal that lives in the Chesapeake Bay. Many sightings say that it is a serpent-like creature without any flippers or horns on its body, it is long, ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet long. It was sighted mostly in 1977 and more in the mid-1980s.
Massachusetts – Dover Demon
The Dover Demon is a small humanoid creature that is a rosy orangish color with a large head and small body. It is bipedal but often travels on all fours or switches back and forth. People have reported that it’s eyes can glow either green or orange, and that it travels alone.
Michigan – The Michigan Dogman
Michigan’s Dogman is reported to be a bipedal dog-like creature with the head of a dog and the body of a man. It was first reported in 1887 by two lumberjacks that described the creature, as well as being spotted in Wexford county where it terrorized residents.
Minnesota – Wendigo
The Wendigo is a creature you must never call by its name. If you say its name it will find you. It is a creature that was once human, and according to Ojibwa legend it eats any “man, woman or child who ventured into its territory. And those were the lucky ones. Sometimes, the wendigo chose to possess a person instead, and then the luckless individual became a Wendigo himself.” This creature is often described as skeletal and deformed, taller than trees with a lipless mouth and jagged teeth. This is the one creature on this list I do not recommend you trying to find, you will not find it, it will find you. And then no one will ever see you again.
Mississippi – Pascagoula River Aliens
The Pascagoula River Aliens were first seen on October 11, 1973. Two friends saw them while fishing on the Pascagoula River. These aliens came down to these two men and took them into their craft, the men said the creatures were bulky looking, and had long fingers. After the events in the craft word spread about the aliens and sent people into a frenzy, which started the trend of wearing tin foil on your head to keep aliens away.
Missouri – Momo
Momo is a local legend, similar to the Bigfoot. The name Momo is short for Missouri Monster and it is reported to stand at about seven feet tall, have a large, pumpkin-shaped head, with a very furry body, often in the color black and hair covering the eyes. Some even say it has a terrible odor and eats dogs to sustain itself.
Montana – Shunka Warak’in
The Shunka Warak’in is described as being nearly black and having high shoulders and a back that sloped downward like a hyena. Several Native American indigenous tribes in the region called the creature Shunka Warak’in, which translates into carrying off dogs, because it would often sneak into indigenous camps at night to steal their dogs. The first documented sightings of the Shunka Warak’in by white settlers began in the 1880’s in the Madison River Valley.
Nebraska – Alkali Lake Monster
The Alkali Lake Monster resides in a lake known as Alkali Lake (also called Walgren Lake) near Hay Springs in northwestern Nebraska. Reports say that this creature is a terrifying aquatic animal said to be anywhere from 40 to 100 feet in length, somewhat resembling an alligator. Some depictions give the monster four legs while others say it has two front legs and a flipper in the back. Still others say it looks more like the Loch Ness monster. Most depictions agree that the beast has a large horn between its eyes and a horrible, unforgettable stench.
Nevada – Tahoe Tessie
Tahoe Tessie was first seen in the 1970s with countless stories of eye-witness from then on. Accounts say it is a snake-like being that surfaces and then disappears again into the deep recesses of Lake Tahoe. Accounts say that the creature can be as long as 20 feet. With the head to be extremely small, but there are few accounts of anyone actually seeing the cranium of this massive creature. And it’s said to move in an up and down fashion, unlike a snake that moves from side to side.
New Hampshire – Wood Devils
The Wood Devils are either a single Bigfoot or a more likely group of them that have roamed the woodlands and hills of Coos County, New Hampshire since the 1930s. People report that they are skinny and Sasquatch-like creatures described as being tall at around 7-9 feet and have shaggy tan-gray hair who often hide behind a tree when a human is coming, and stay behind that tree until the coast is clear. If there is no cover to hide in, the Woods Devil will stand perfectly still.
New Jersey – Jersey Devil
The Jersey Devil is native to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. It is often described as having hooves, a snake’s tail, bat-wings and a head that looks something like a horse. While there are many stories detailing the origin of the Jersey Devil, sightings have been reported beginning in the 1700s and continuing on until the past decade.
New Mexico – Teratorns
The Teratorn, was once a living creature and is a distant relative of the California Condor. It had a wingspan of around twelve feet and weighed about thirty-three pounds. In comparison, the Bald Eagle’s wingspan ranges from six to seven-and-a-half feet. Two scientists discovered the first remains in the early 1900s and named the species in 1909. New Mexico legends say that there are still some alive there, though they have been extinct for a long time..
New York – Champ
Champ is a lake monster that lives in Lake Champlain. The lake is a natural freshwater lake in North America and partially situated across the U.S.-Canada border. There have been over 300 reported sightings, and people have said it is possibly a relative of the plesiosaur, an extinct group of aquatic reptiles.
North Carolina – The Beast of Bladenboro
The Beast of Bladenboro was first seen in Bladen County in the town of Clarkton. On December 29, 1953 this cat-like creature said to be three feet long and twenty inches high, with a log tail and a cats face skulked off into the darkness. After killing a few dogs, when they were found the dog’s bodies had been completely drained of blood.
North Dakota – Thunderbird
The Thunder bird originates from Native American legend and was called such because the flapping of its powerful wings sounded like thunder, and lightning would shoot out of its eyes. The Thunderbirds brought rain and storms, which could be good or bad. Good – when the rain was needed or bad when the rain came with destructive winds, floods, and fires caused by lightning. The bird was said to be so large, that several legends tell it picking up a whale in its talons. They were said to have bright and colorful feathers, with sharp teeth and claws and lived in the clouds high above the tallest mountains.
Ohio – Loveland Frogmen
The Loveland Frogmen are humanoid toads, or frogs, that prowl the streets of Loveland, Ohio. The creature stands upright at 4 feet and seems to be intelligent. Reports of seeing them at night in the light of a car’s headlight say that if you see them they will run away, after staring at you for a minute or two.
Oklahoma – Oklahoma Octopus
The Oklahoma Octopus seems to be just that, an octopus. However, octopi are salt water creatures, making this the only freshwater dwelling cephalopod species. This creature does not seem to be harmful in any way, just unique.
Oregon – Colossal Claude
Colossal Claude is said to be 15 to 40 feet long, with an 8 foot long neck. It has a round tan body with a snake, horse or camel-like head and a long serpentine tail. It was first reported in 1934 by L.A. Larson, first mate of the Columbia River Lightship. Other crew members on the Lightship also saw the creature and watched on with binoculars.
Pennsylvania – The Squonk
The Squonks were first written about in a book by William T. Cox called Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, With a Few Desert and Mountain Beasts. The creatures are described to have ill fitting skin, being covered with wart, and is said to be ashamed of its appearance and therefore hides from plain sight, spending most of its time weeping. Hunters who have tried catching squonks have found out the creature is capable of dissolving completely into a pool of tears and bubbles when cornered.
Rhode Island – Vampire Mercy Brown
The vampire Mercy Brown was a real woman who died in the 1890’s. A family member of hers named Edwin Brown died of sickness. And in an attempt to find out what was killing him, townsmen dug up deceased family members to see if they were tormenting him from beyond the grave. They decided that if the bodies of past relatives were relatively intact then they were the ones responsible for his sickness. Unfortunately for Mercy, she was that person. Her body was found on her side, her face appeared flush, and there was blood in her heart and in her veins. Doctors assured people that this was a normal level of decomposition, though many did not believe him and removed her heart for Edwin to consume. This did not help and he died two months later.
South Carolina – Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp
The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp is said to have glowing red eyes with tough green skin, three fingers and black nails. One account says that it chased a man and leapt onto his car before being shaken off.
South Dakota – Taku-He
The Taku-He are seen mostly in wide-open areas, dragging dead prey behind him or simply staring at witnesses. This creature is said to be eight feet tall and similar to bigfoot. Many mysterious deaths linked to this monster, though those who have actually seen it and survived never mention anything about feeling threatened. It has also been linked with the mutilation of many farm animals, usually young calves, would be found with their sexual organs removed and blood completely drained from the bodies. They inhabit a small stretch of woodlands at Sica Hollow. “Sica” itself means “bad” or “evil” and has been referred to as such long before South Dakota was settled by Europeans.
Tennessee – Tennessee Wildman
The Tennessee Wildman has either dark grey hair or dark ginger hair, is about 7 feet tall and is always accompanied with piercing red eyes. It is known to have a disturbing war cry that can frighten anyone that hears it and has a horrible smell that’s reminiscent to the Skunk Ape.
Texas – Chupacabra
The Chupacabra is known to attack animals and consume their blood. The name is derived from the Spanish words chupar (“to suck”) and cabra (“goat”) and can be translated as “goat-sucker.” In 1995, in Puerto Rico, where they were blamed for attacks on goats, sheep, and other domestic animals, supposedly leaving uneaten carcasses that were drained of blood. Early reports described a creature that stood upright and resembled a large reptilian kangaroo with huge red eyes
Utah – Bear Lake Monster
The Bear Lake Monster is located in the Bear Lake in Utah. It is described as a creature with an unknown amount of legs, anywhere between 40 and 200 feet long, a head shaped like a walrus without tusks or an alligator’s. It is said to be very awkward on land but can swim extremely well. A Native American legend in the area describes a story between two lovers whom, upon being pursued by some of their fellow tribesmen, plunged into the lake and were changed by the Great Spirit into two large serpents.
Vermont – Northfield Pigman
The Northfeild Pigman is a man-sized figure covered in white hair and he had the facial features of a pig. More than one nighttime traveler has claimed to see the Pigman while driving their car along a deserted country road, the hairy beast narrowly missing the front-end of the vehicle.
Virginia – Snallygaster
The Snallygaster of Virginia, also called the Schneller Geist, meaning “quick spirit” in German. It is often described as having half-reptile and half-bird features with a metallic beak lined with razor-sharp teeth, occasionally with octopus-like tentacles. To hunt it swoops silently from the sky to pick up and carry off its victims. Some stories claim that this monster sucked the blood of its victims.
Washington – Bigfoot
Bigfoot, which is notably the most known creature of America is a large, muscular, bipedal ape-like creature, roughly 6–9 ft tall, and covered in black, dark brown, or dark reddish hair. It has a pungent, foul smelling odor commonly described as similar to rotten eggs or skunk. The face of a Bigfoot is often described as human-like, with a flat nose and visible lips. The enormous footprints for which the creature is named are claimed to be as large as 24 in long and 8 in wide, some footprint casts have also contained claw marks.
West Virginia – Mothman
Mothman was first seen on November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant told police they saw a large grey creature whose eyes “glowed red” when the car’s headlights picked it up. They described it as a “large flying man with ten-foot wings”, following their car while they were driving in an area outside of town. During the next few days, other people reported similar sightings.
Wisconsin – The Beast of Bray Road
The Beast of Bray Road is described as a hairy humanoid with canine features, which has been sighted in Wisconsin dating back to 1936 on a rural road outside of Elkhorn, Wisconsin. More recent sightings in the 1980s and 1990s, place the creature in Racine, Walworth and Jefferson Counties. Those who have seen the beast describe him as eating or hunting/scavenging. It is said to be around six feet tall with gray and brown fur. Its face resembles that of a wolf, with shiny yellow eyes and pointed ears. Its body, though furry, looks like a muscular man. The creature is said to run and walk on all four of its legs or just its hind legs and has been spied sitting on its haunches and kneeling like a man.
Wyoming – Jackalope
The Jackalope is an antlered species of rabbit, sometimes rumored to be extinct. It is said to be a cross between a now extinct pygmy-deer and a species of killer-rabbit. The antlered species of rabbit are brownish in color, weight between three and five pounds, and move with lightning speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.
