Last week we covered where west Michiganders love to divulge in Chinese food and this week we’re staying in Asia and moseying down south to Japan. We have compiled a few of the most loved Japanese restaurants right here in Grand Rapids from sushi to more traditional entrees. I personally love sushi and the aesthetic of Japanese restaurants—more simplistic yet modern to some surrounding guests in complete luxury.
With the final holiday of 2020 very quickly approaching and this year being a completely new experience for us all, I think we all should take a step out of our comfort zone and try some delicious new food (you won’t know till you try!). Although here in the mitten we are under strict quarantine rules, takeout is always a great option to brighten up a cozy night in.
Rockwell Republic $$
Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Rockwell Republic is an excellent gastropub that puts an Asian twist on their American menu. Come dine in the two story restaurant that’s complemented with beautiful brick walls and a rich dark wood bar that is stocked fully to serve your favorite cocktails with any entrée.
Though the entire menu is divine, Rockwell Republic proudly serves a selection of delicious sushi with well-known rolls such as a California and spicy tuna and their very own poke republic bowl roll. Rockwell Republic is well-loved here in the historic district of Grand Rapids so come experience their sushi and sake this holiday season
Ju Sushi & Lounge $$
This posh sushi restaurant brings nothing other than luxurious service and an irresistible atmosphere that keeps all its customers returning for more. The décor alone is enough to keep guests interested with beautiful artwork, warm lighting and plush leather couches and armchairs.
Though the interior is gorgeous, the food is the highlight of the joint. Sushi is the main focus of their menu serving over 30 options for specialty rolls and an array of common choices and nigiri. Japanese entrees are additionally available at Ju Sushi & Lounge if you’re looking for cuisine other than sushi like choices of teriyaki, udon and katsu.
Maru $$
Ten years ago is when Robert Song and business partner Chef Moon Yang opened Maru’s doors to their very first guests. Seeking authentic Japanese cuisine with a twist of Moon’s personal contemporary taste makes Maru a unique restaurant to bring to Grand Rapids.
Song is passionate about creating a delightful environment for guests and their amazing chefs. Maru has a modern interior with preset tables that make guests feel welcomed and cared for and the food is prepared with love. The freshest ingredients are guaranteed at Maru with scratch-made sauces and premium sushi rice sourced from California. Try one of their signature rolls next time you’re in the mood for sushi!

Dessert is always looked forward to after dinner so order mochi and tempura ice cream to bring some sweet into your night after enjoying your meal!
