I’ve lived in a jungle for two years. Not an actual jungle, of course, more of a plant-infested household that sometimes feels like one. Plants bring so much life into a home and when you let that life in, you just want more. Thinking about how different my space feels after filling it with houseplants, I wanted to share how they can transform your home, too.
One of the most important aspects of a home is its environment. You want your home to be a sanctuary- an oasis even! But how do you achieve that? How do you make your home one that you never want to leave? It’s no easy feat, and there are many ways to reach that level of comfort, but turning your home into an indoor jungle is surely one of them. In light of that, here are 3 ways plants can transform your home.
1. They bring a pop of color and new texture
Do you have a hauntingly empty corner in your home? How about putting a tall plant there? It highlights an unused part of your home and offers a great pop of color. We suggest a snake plant, as they don’t need a lot of sunlight and they’re easy to take care of while still being pleasing to the eye.
2. They make you happy
Filling your home with houseplants is not purely for aesthetics. An article titled, Does greenery experienced indoors and outdoors provide an escape and support mental health during the COVID-19 quarantine? the author states that “plants [in your home] can reduce stress, physical discomfort, anxiety, depressive symptoms, as well as increase attention, mood, and cognitive performance.” In other words, plants inside your home make you feel happier and less stressed.
Science also shows that being in or around nature has tremendous effects on your mental health. An article titled Plant Happiness Equation People + Trees= says “getting ‘close’ to nature is good for you, but arguably living close to nature is – probably– even better.” As we’re nearing the end of the pandemic and we’re barely staying afloat, this is a great thing to keep in mind if you don’t live near any source of nature.
3. They cleanse the air
While not every plant has air-cleansing abilities, many do! If you like your air more dust and toxin-free, perhaps consider purchasing some of the plants that are listed on NASA’s houseplant list, proven to assist in cleaning the air: spider plant, pothos, peace lily, snake plant, and many more! These are sure to transform your living space into a more breathable and comfortable atmosphere.
We hope you’ve taken some inspiration on how to transform your living space with plants. For help and advice, go to your local plant nursery and pick out a couple that feel right for you and your home!
