Please be warned of spoilers for Venom: Let there be Carnage, mentions of murder and killing will be touched on, as well as mild gore. The movie is rated PG-13 for a reason.
Venom and his universe first came to the big screen back in 2018, introducing Marvel movie watchers to this symbiotic goop character that likes to eat brains and chocolate. It also introduced us to Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy. This sequel follows the time after the first movie, showing the audience how Venom and Eddie interact with each other, creating an almost functional chaos.
As the movie progresses you get to witness Eddie talking to Venom under his breath when around others in snarky tones and short sentences. Only dragging themselves into different rooms if the conversations get too heated or long. This movie explores more of their dynamic, no matter the chaos it brings, from how they handle Venom’s hunger (often with chickens and chocolate) to how they handle Eddie’s career.
The main plot of the story follows Eddie helping find the bodies of a murderer, Cletus Kasady who is played by Woody Harrelson. Woody’s character refuses to talk to anyone but Eddie, citing later that he only wanted to be Eddie’s friend. Upon Eddie’s first meeting with Cletus there isn’t much that happens between the two, minor interactions that help expose where the bodies are hidden. What the audience really takes away from the scene with Cletus is how smart Venom can be. At the end of this scene the audience sees Venom force Eddie to look into Cletus’ cell, and see etchings on the walls of the cell that Cletus had made over his time being imprisoned. It is noted that even though in the end Eddie does put together a lot of the clues that Cletus has provided, it would be Venom who is to be credited for finding these clues in the first place, at one point Eddie would remark “what would Venom do” when trying to piece together the clues himself.
All in all the movie was enjoyable, it was funny and straightforward in the plot, even the end credits scene that Marvel is so famous for segues into the new Spiderman movie quite well, introducing Venom and Eddie to the multiverse. Though if one were to look a bit further into the plot, holes would soon start to come out of the woodwork, I could go on and on about how I think Shriek was a good character not developed enough and used as a plot device. Or how the cops and detectives were not all that smart when finding the missing victims of Cletus Kasady. Yet, I digress. I love Venom and Eddie’s dynamic, and cannot wait to see what is in store for them next.
